A lot of emphasis is put on saddle comfort without much thought to bridle comfort. Conventional bridles often sit too close to the horse's ears, 'cutting' in to them when a contact is taken up. The leverage then created by the rider's hands down the reins is substantial by the time it reaches the poll. The discomfort can then be considerable when a bit is added.
